SUPPLY CHAIN STRATEGIES, DEVELOPMENTS IN TRANSPORTATION AND TRANSPARECY
The main program for this year’s EASTLOG congress is focused on the most important issues impacting the logistics market over the medium- and long-term. The theme for year 14 is Supply Chain Strategies, Developments in Transportation and Transparency.

SUPPLY CHAIN STRATEGIES
Consumer demand across Europe has undergone tremendous change as personal purchasing power has grown in Central and Eastern Europe. In the fast-moving consumer goods industry in particular there has been a clear move to establish distribution frameworks and centralized distribution to cover larger regions. As a result of this trend, distribution centers have been relocating to Moravia and Slovakia, all the more that many of the companies have production facilities in Eastern Europe and are keen to optimize their overall supply chain. The main section of the congress’s program, therefore, will focus on strategies for supply chains.
TRANSPARENCY
Knowledge and information are the foundation for success. Looking for synergies and raising operational efficiency are not possible without having the relevant information on merchandise, without the flow of data on orders and deliveries. Bottlenecks cannot be overcome without partners in the supply chain communicating with one another. Though these issues are common to all logistics professionals, practice shows that many factors are in play and they are not always of a technical nature. The section on transparency in the supply chain reveals what actual instruments are available for improving supply chain efficiency. The discussion, however, will focus primarily on obstacles in sharing data and on approaches for removing these obstacles.
DEVELOPMENTS IN TRANSPORTATION
One of the sectors hardest hit by the economic downturn has been transportation services. This sector traditionally has been very dependent on the level of supply and demand, and this has held true during a climate of volatility. Demand destruction led to a fall in prices and brought a wave of acquisitions. Road freight transport firms had to sell off equipment and lay off drivers. The rise in demand in the second half of 2010 largely reversed this trend, even in those sectors of the market where there was extra capacity apparently due to insufficient demand. How will the return of demand be reflected in the level of supply on the market? Where are prices of these services headed? What sort of opportunities for revenues and margins does this present to transport companies?
